The new ‘academic’ year begins on September 9th with a presentation on the much debated and troubling paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, including his ‘Garden of Earthly Delights’ altarpiece. Bosch died in 1516, a year before Martin Luther produced his ’95 theses’ attacking abuses in the church, and there is much to compare as Bosch’s paintings include anti clerical illustrations which fit the Reformation debate.
Since starting, in October 2006, the History of Art group will have had a total of 236 meetings by the time it celebrates its 20th birthday on the 14th October with a look at Hans Holbein, painter to Henry VIII.
Works by Breughel, and Caravaggio will take us through to Christmas, whilst the spring programme in 2017 includes the ‘heavy weight’ Baroque artists Rubens, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Velasquez, Vermeer, Poussin and Claude.
A mere £12 will gain you admission to all 13 talks and includes a post talk cuppa and biscuit. Attendances average 80 per session so we are fortunate that we can meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday afternoons at Gracious Street Methodist Church (COGS) in Knaresborough.
Talks start at 2pm but please arrive by 1.45pm to check in.
